Gin-Chia: Nature's Energy Booster!

Centuries ago, the great American Indian civilizations had their own form of the Pony Express. However, instead of men riding horses at full gallop for 20 miles and then changing steeds, the Indians ran the distance themselves and then passed their package to another man. Each of the runners carried a small pouch containing a provision that they ate on the run to give them the energy and stamina necessary to run their distance.

They often called it "running food" because of its ability to increase endurance. It contains neither caffeine nor any other artificial stimulant; on the contrary, it's 100% natural and proven to be one of the richest plant sources of protein.

Chia

This substance is none other than Chia Salvia Columbariae, or "Chia seed". Chia is a member of the mint family and grows naturally from the Mojave Desert all the way down into Argentina.

For centuries, Chia was of great economic importance to Native Americans of the Southwest and California coast. It was a major food crop of the Aztecs. The roasted seeds were mixed with water and eaten as gruel or ground into flour, called pinole, for baking. Indians also placed the seeds in water to make poultices and beverages.

One tablespoon of Chia seeds mixed in water was reputed to be sufficient nutrition to sustain a man on a forced march for 24 hours. An infusion of the seeds was valued by Spanish Missionaries as a fever remedy and as a poultice for gunshot wounds.

Today, long distance hikers eat Chia seeds to provide energy.

According to a study conducted by the University of Arizona in 2001, Chia possesses the highest percentage of the polyunsaturated fatty acids, a-linolenic and linoleic (i.e. 83.2%), of all crops. It is a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, natural antioxidants and dietetic fiber. This same study also showed that the protein content of Chia is higher than other nutritional grains. Compare Chia's 19-23% protein to wheat (14%), corn (14%), rice (8.5%), oats (15.3%), and barley (9.2%). And, unlike these other grains, it is a complete protein, meaning that it has the appropriate balance of all essential amino

acids. Chia seed is also a good source of B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, potassium,

zinc, and copper.

Ginseng

"Ginseng" is said to mean 'the wonder of the world.' The roots are called by the natives of China, Jin-chen, meaning 'like a man,' in reference to their resemblance to the human form. The American Indian name for the plant, garantoquen, has the same meaning. It is held in such esteem by the natives of China, that it is included as a necessity in all their best herbal combinations. The prepared root is chewed to increase vitality and to remove both mental and bodily fatigue.
